General anaesthesia in cattle
Cattle are the most sensitive of all species to xylazine; a very low dose will induce anaesthesia. The triple action of xylazine - sedation, muscle relaxation and analgesia - enables the veterinarian to perform a wide variety of operations.
Rompun may be administered by intramuscular, intravenous or epidural injection.
For IV injection, the dose is reduced by 1/2 to 1/3 of the IM dose.
The onset of action after slow intravenous injection is more rapid than after intramuscular injection, but the duration of action is shorter. The table shows various doses according to the type and intensity of the effect required.
