Rompun®, containing the active ingredient Xylazine, is used in veterinary medicine for sedation, analgesia and muscle relaxation. Furthermore, Xylazine can be used for epidural anaethesia and for anaesthetic premedication. The effects of Xylazine are related to depression of the nervous system. Xylazine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist and has effects on presynaptic and postsynaptic receptors of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Rompun® can be used in a wide range of animal species. It can be administered by intramuscular, subcutaneous or intravenous route. Rompun® is available as 2% injectable solution and as a dry substance with solvent. The Rompun® dry substance is particularly suitable for administration by dart gun. Xylazine was discovered by Bayer researchers in the 1960s of the last century.
